Comparative Literature: Books

To find a work of literature, look it up by author or title in the Dartmouth Library Catalog.

Most works of literature are found in the PG (for Slavic language literatures), PQ (for Romance language literatures -- French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese), PR (for British, Irish, Canadian, Australian, and postcolonial writers in English), PS (for American writers), and PT (for German and Scandinavian language literatures) Library of Congress call number ranges, on Stack Level 4, Stack Level 5, and Stack Level 6. The East Asian literature collection, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literatures, can be found on Stack Level M (Mezzanine) and Stack Level 2. Some older editions are found in the 800s of the Dewey call number range, located on Berry Level 3. Rauner Special Collections Library has special collections of many first editions and rare books.

To find literary criticism, search the Dartmouth Library Catalog by subject, using the name of an author or a topic. These are some examples of Library of Congress subject headings:

• Symbolism (Literary Movement)

• German literature -- Jewish authors

If you don't know the Library of Congress subject heading, search by keyword using a variety of terms that are relevant to your topic.

Borrow Direct

Borrow Direct allows you to request books from the combined library catalogs of Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University. If you do not find the book you need in the Dartmouth Library Catalog, or if the book is checked out to another patron, look for it first in Borrow Direct before requesting it from Interlibrary Loan.
