Baker-Berry Information & Research Desks: Manual

Welcome!!

Baker-Berry Library has two Information Desks – one in the main corridor of Baker, the other is at the top of the main staircase as you enter Berry. Both desks are designed to serve as the first point of access to Baker-Berry Library.

As the first person a library guest encounters at Baker-Berry Library (in person or over the phone), it is important for you to convey a courteous and helpful attitude to our patrons and visitors. The staff at the Information Desks is relied upon to present the Library and Dartmouth College in a positive light.

Specific Examples of Tasks You Are Asked to Complete:

  • Serve as a welcoming presence for people entering Baker-Berry Library
  • Answer questions in person or via the telephone
  • Direct patrons to various locations
  • Answer and transfer incoming calls
  • Monitor and respond to the inventory control gates
  • Show guests how to search for sources if they know the subject, author or title, and how check an item’s availability.
  • Explain the various ‘Locations’ and how to get books from other libraries.
  • Appropriately refer questions to the student supervisor or librarians as necessary.

Requirements of Information Desk Staff:

  • Possess a broad knowledge of Baker-Berry Library’s physical layout
  • Be familiar with the basic functions of the different areas within the building
  • Have a general knowledge of the Dartmouth campus
  • Be familiar with the Internet and Dartmouth College Library’s Databases
  • Confidence and comfort in dealing with the public
  • A positive attitude with a commitment towards strong customer service

The Information Desks are staffed and supervised by the Research & Information Services Department of Baker-Berry Library. The immediate supervisor is Greg Potter, Research & Information Desk Coordinator at Baker-Berry Library.
