In the Library's Collection

The library's collection contains several books and journal titles which look at online or digital cartography. The resources are scattered throughout the collections under different call numbers. However, one call number range, G 70.212, is a good starting place to physically browse.

Introduction to Mapping Online

This page highlights resources both purchased and free that allow you to create maps online. In most cases, you do not have to install software. The site provides data and other resources you need to create a map. Click on a tab and get started mapping!

The resources available include:

Making your own maps!

  • Mapping for Everyone
A site from ESRI, makers of ArcGIS, which allows you to map a limited range of variables and inbed those maps into web pages.
  • BatchGeo
This site allows you to convert a list of addresses into points on a map. If you have a spreadsheet of addresses, this site will convert them to points and you can then map those points.
  • Geocoding from TravelGIS.com
Geocode individual addresses and map that point.
  • FreeDemographics.com
FreeDemographicsTM, a product of SRC, LLC, introduces novice and expert users of demographic data to a new and powerful way to view and act upon consumer and market insights, using instant interactive maps, detailed summary and comparison reports, and fast access to U.S. Census data sorted by geographies and demographic characteristics.
  • Social Explorer - Professional Edition
Social Explorer provides easy access to demographic information about the United States, from 1790 to present.
