Borrow Direct

Search and borrow materials from the shared collections of our partner libraries.

Borrow Direct is a patron-initiated rapid book request and delivery system. It enables faculty, staff and students to search the combined library catalogs of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke University, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Yale and the Center for Research Libraries, a collection of over 60 million volumes, and directly request expedited delivery of circulating items.

What Can I Request?

Borrow Direct is available to Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff. Other patrons interested in requesting materials may do so through DartDoc.

Requestable materials include:

  • Books, scores, DVDs, CDs, microfilm, and microfiche not owned by the Dartmouth College Library.
  • Books, scores, DVDs, CDs, microfilm, and microfiche  that are currently unavailable through the library catalog.
  • Books, scores, DVDs, CDs, microfilm, and microfiche  that normally circulate from our partners' collections.

Materials that cannot be requested include:

  • Items currently AVAILABLE in the library catalog.
  • Journals, magazines, newspapers and other serial publications.
  • Photocopies.
  • Non-circulating items, e.g. Reference books, rare books, or archival material.

Managing Your Account

Books and other items are found under the Borrow Direct "My account" link once you have logged on. Borrow Direct items are renewable one week before they are due through your Dartmouth catalog library account for a 6 week renewal.

When a Request Arrives

You will receive an email when an item ships, and another notice when it has arrived and is ready to be picked up. Most items will be available for pick-up at your designated location within 4 working days of the date you placed the request. Items will be held for one week only for pick up. Any item not picked up in one week will be returned to the lending library.

Loan Periods and Renewals

The usual loan period for Borrow Direct items is 42 days plus one 42 day renewal. You can renew an item one week before it is due through your Dartmouth catalog library account. All items are also subject to recall by the owning library.

Returning Materials

Return Borrow Direct material to any of the designated pick-up libraries of Dartmouth College. Materials are to be returned by the due date or if requested by the Borrow Direct staff.
