Dartmouth College Resource Sharing

Search and borrow materials from the shared collections of our partner libraries.  DartDoc

Resource Sharing Services offers several options for providing access to materials held in our collections or obtaining materials from other libraries or sources. Our services include Document Delivery, Borrow Direct, and DartDoc.

Though we understand that textbook prices are especially high, the library urges you to consider carefully before requesting required class textbooks via Borrow Direct or DartDoc. Why?

  • Interlibrary loan is designed for short term borrowing and is subject to recalls, so it is possible you would not be able to keep the book for the entire semester. Additionally, the due dates for DartDoc items are set by the lending library, not the Dartmouth Libraries, and renewals are not always allowed by the lending library.
  • Loaned books usually take between 4 days and 2 weeks to arrive, so you could already be behind in your classwork and reading by the time they arrive.
  • Few libraries purchase textbooks, and if they do, they typically reserve them for their students' use.
  • Even fewer libraries have the newest editions that are required for classes.

If you decide to request a textbook, we will attempt to borrow it for you. However, since these books are often difficult to obtain, your request might not be successfully filled. Also, please be aware that all DartDoc requests for books currently on Reserve will be canceled, as the item is available on campus.

As an alternative, many sites offer discounted and used textbooks as well as textbook rentals. You can rent text books for extended periods of time, often longer than we can borrow them, even with one renewal.

Here are some examples of the options available:

Borrow Direct vs. DartDoc

Unsure whether to use Borrow Direct or DartDoc? Here are some helpful guidelines.

  • Borrow Direct is the quickest and most efficient way to order books and other library material. If the item you would like is available in the Borrow Direct catalog, this is your best option.
  • For items not available through Borrow Direct, try DartDoc. Through DartDoc we can request from libraries all over the world.
  • For journal articles, book chapters, videorecordings, microforms and or any other material not available through Borrow Direct, please place your requests through DartDoc.
  • For any Dartmouth patron who is not a current student, faculty or staff member, use DartDoc. Please check your privileges for cost.

Keeping Track of Requests

You can keep track of Borrow Direct and DartDoc requests from when you place the request to when they are returned.

  • By logging into your Borrow Direct and DartDoc accounts, you can view the status of any individual request.
  • When an item arrives or is otherwise made available, you will be notified, typically by email. Borrow Direct will also send an email to indicate that the item has shipped from the lending library.
  • Once the item is checked out to you, you can view it in your library account for due dates and renewal options.
  • If you have a question about the status of an item, you can contact our offices by phone or email.
