WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

The Global Health Council is a membership alliance comprised of health care professionals and organizations (NGOs, foundations, government organizations, corporations and academic institutions) that "work to ensure global health for all". Because Dartmouth College is an organizational member of the Global Health Council, Dartmouth faculty, students and staff can enroll as associate members at no charge. GHEC is a "consortium of health professionals, educators, students and institutions committed to improving the ability of the global workforce to meet the needs of underserved populations". Good source of teaching and learning resources about global health.
