MUSIC AT JONES MEDIA CENTER

  • Ableton Live 11 Standard Edition
    The most recent version of Ableton, used in Sonic Arts courses. Located at stations 13 & 14 in Jones.
  • Audacity
    Audacity is an easy-to-use, multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.
    Developed by a group of volunteers as open source. Download to your own laptop or use in the Jones Media Center.
  • GarageBand
    Available on Jones Media Center iMacs. For more information on recording in Jones, see https://researchguides.dartmouth.edu/c.php?g=59724&p=382828
  • Logic Pro
    There are two desktop computers in the Jones Media Center equipped with Logic for composition students. The stations are first-come, first-served. If the computer you need to use is occupied please speak to a staff member at the Jones circulation desk.
  • Sibelius Ultimate
    Best for composing, arranging, and publishing scores and parts of any size and complexity. Also great for creating notation worksheets and exercises for educators.Sibelius Ultimate is available at stations 13 & 14 in Jones.
  • Jones Media Center Equipment
    Audio recording kits are available at the Jones Media Center circulation desk.
  • Hanover Strings
    For instrument and equipment rental within walking distance of campus.

Whisper Room Jones Media Center 2 Borrow recording equipment at the media services desk or bring your own.  No piano. Two Shure KSM32 cardioid condenser microphones are in the Whisper Room. Jones.Media.Center@Dartmouth.edu
Practice Rooms Music Department Corridor 3 Most practice rooms have an upright piano.

  • Ableton (90-day Trial)
    Dartmouth students may sign up for a free 90-day trial of Ableton Live. This 90-day trial is sufficient to cover use for the duration of one Sonic Arts class. If you plan to take a Sonic Arts course, please reserve your trial for use during the term in which you are registered for the course.
  • Finale Notepad
    This free notation software is best for notating brief excerpts. For example, if you need to transcribe a couple of measures of a melody for use as an image in a research paper.
  • MuseScore
    This open-source software is preferred by many Dartmouth a capella groups for arranging. MuseScore allows for up to eight parts.
  • Sibelius for Mac Users
    Sibelius 7.5 is available for download to all Dartmouth users with a netID and password. This notation software is particularly useful for music theory courses where part-writing and/or composition is required.
  • Sibelius for Windows Users
    Sibelius 7.5 is available for download to all Dartmouth users with a netID and password. This notation software is particularly useful for music theory courses where part-writing and/or composition is required.
