The NIH has issued a comprehensive update to its Public Access Policy with the release of the 2024 NIH Public Access Policy (Notice NOT-OD-25-047, December 17, 2024). This updated policy replaces the longstanding 2008 Public Access Policy and accelerates NIH’s commitment to maximizing transparency and timely public access to NIH-funded research.
Important: The effective date for the 2024 Policy has now been moved up to July 1, 2025 (see Notice NOT-OD-25-101, April 30, 2025). From this date forward, all Author Accepted Manuscripts (AAMs) accepted for publication on or after July 1, 2025, that result from NIH funding—whether from grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, intramural research, or NIH employee work—must be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication, with public availability without embargo starting on the official date of publication.
Please begin preparing now to ensure seamless adherence to the July 1, 2025 effective date. Early planning will help avoid submission delays, support funding continuity, and contribute to the broader goal of making NIH-funded research openly accessible to all.
