New York Times: Getting Started

To create a new Dartmouth-sponsored New York Times account:

1. Go to nytimes.com on a web browser (use a private or incognito window for best results).
2. Click “Log In” at the top right.
3. Click “Continue with work or school single sign-on.”
4. Enter your Dartmouth.edu email address when prompted.
5. Log in to SSO using your Dartmouth NetID and password.
6. For subsequent logins, go to nytimes.com and select “Continue with work or school single sign-on” from the login screen.

Most Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff who have an active Dartmouth-sponsored NYT account (created prior to 9/3/25) can continue accessing The New York Times with their existing credentials until the summer of 2026. No immediate action is required. This includes accounts with the suffix @dartmouth.edu or @tuck.dartmouth.edu that are tied to a current Dartmouth student, staff, or faculty account.

If you have an active Dartmouth-sponsored NYT accounts (created prior to 9/3/25) you should connect your account to your SSO login. This can be done at any time, but will need to be completed before the summer of 2026. To do this:

1. Go to nytimes.com on a web browser (use a private or incognito window for best results).
2. Log in to your Dartmouth-sponsored NYT account using your email address and password.
3. Navigate to My Account > Account Settings > Email and settings.
4. Click to “Connect” to a Work or School account.
5. Log in to SSO using your Dartmouth NetID and password.

If you have purchased an upgrade (to The Athletic or Games) using your personal credit card using your existing Dartmouth-sponsored NYT account, that subscription should carry over to the Dartmouth-sponsored SSO account and you should continue to see charges on your personal credit card statement.

If you prefer to connect your Dartmouth-sponsored News account to an existing personal NYT account, please follow the instructions under "Already have a personal NYT account?" 

You can only connect one email address to your Dartmouth-sponsored News account. 

If you have an active Dartmouth-sponsored NYT accounts (created prior to 9/3/25) and are unable to login, please Ask Us for assistance.

If you have a paid personal News subscription, and you'd like to switch to Dartmouth-sponsored News subscription:

1. Cancel your paid personal News subscription.
2. Go to nytimes.com on a web browser (use a private or incognito window for best results).
3. Log in to your personal NYT account.
4. Navigate to My Account > Account Settings > Email and settings.
5. Click to “Connect” with a Work or School account
6. Log in to SSO using your Dartmouth NetID and password.

Note that if you have paid personal subscriptions to upgrade such as The Athletic or Games, you can retain those subscriptions and connect them to your Dartmouth-sponsored news accounts. To do this, you will need to cancel only the News portion of your personal subscription. Your personal credit card will continue to be charged for any upgrades. 

To cancel an existing paid subscriber account, please Cancel Your Subscription via the New York Times website.

• A New York Times account with full digital access to news and audio, accessible via NYTimes.com, Cooking, Wirecutter, The New York Times app, and The New York Times Audio app (apps available for iOS and Android).
• Digital content, from mid-1990s to present, including videos, podcasts, and interactive media.
• New York Times articles from 1851 to present, from the print and digital editions.

Dartmouth’s subscription does NOT include access to The Athletic or Games.

Mobile apps require that SSO users set up a password which can be done under “account>account settings" in the top right corner of the nytimes.com website.

• New York Times access is for current students, faculty, and staff only. 
• Only one email address can be connected to your Dartmouth-sponsored SSO account. 
• After setting up your Dartmouth-sponsored account, you can change the email address (where you will receive newsletters and alerts) through the account settings. 
• Current Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff will be asked to confirm their accounts once a year.
