Browsing Physical Scores

Art Songs

Art songs are found in various call number ranges depending on accompanying instrument(s), but the bulk are located between M1611-M1640. These are split between Baker Stacks Level 1 and the East Reading Room. 

Musical Theater and Opera

Piano/vocal scores for musical theater and opera are located around M1500-M1600 on Baker Stacks Level 1. In general, these are shelved by composer last name, though differing editions of the same dramatic work may be found at multiple call numbers.

Art Songs

To find art songs in Library Search, use the Advance Search:

• Select “Subject” from the “Any Field” dropdown menu and type “Songs.”
• Select “Scores” under the “Material Type” dropdown menu. 
• In subsequent fields, you may add voice type or key range. If using key range, put this term in quotation marks.
• You may wish to add piano in a subsequent field to filter out a high number of pieces for chamber ensembles. 
• If searching for songs in specific languages, select one from the dropdown menu. 

Operas and Musicals

To find piano/vocal scores for operas and musicals in Library Search, use the Advance Search:

• Select “Title” from the “Any Field” dropdown menu and type the title of the opera or musical in English or its original language.

• Select “Scores” under the “Material Type” dropdown menu.

Song Databases

The following databases may be useful for choosing song repertoire for a recital. Most of these databases are free resources, but some offer the option to purchase scores you may already have access to through Dartmouth. Don't purchase a score found on these databases without first checking for a free copy by:

• searching the Dartmouth Library holdings
• searching the holdings of our Borrow Direct partners
• contacting the librarian to see if a copy can be purchased for the library’s score collection
