Rauner Special Collections Library: World War I

This guide is intended to assist with orientation to and location of WWI materials available for research at Rauner Special Collections Library.

Personal Narratives

Rauner has numerous first-hand accounts of various campaigns, battles, and even the entire war itself. These include illustrations and maps as well as printed texts and manuscript letters. Some representative examples are personal diaries kept by soldiers during the war, printed memoirs, and drawings or sketches, such as:

  • Robert Graves’s memoir Good-bye to all that (Eberhart PR6013.R35 Z5 1929b).
  • Siegfried Sassoon’s Memoirs of an infantry officer (Rare D640 .S3415 1930a).
  • Muirhead Bone’s drawings in The Western front (Val 827 M76 Y6).

To find these materials, use the Library Catalog and enter “World War, 1914-1918 -- Personal narratives, American” in the search field, then limit the results to Rauner Library in the left-hand filter column. Don’t forget to use keywords to search the Finding Aid Database as well!
