Dartmouth Theses and Dissertations

Starting in the summer term of 2022, all Dartmouth graduate theses and dissertations will be published in Dartmouth Digital Commons. Once your thesis is fully completed and approved by your department, follow the steps below to submit it for posting. Submitting a thesis or dissertation to Dartmouth Digital Commons

  1. Go to https://digitalcommons.dartmouth.edu/. Create an account, or log in if you already have one. This account is independent from your other Dartmouth accounts. To create an account, click on “My Account,” and follow the instructions. We recommend that you use your Dartmouth email address for general use and submitting your own work, though other email addresses can also be used.
  2. From the Dartmouth Digital Commons homepage, click on “Submit Work” (under “Contribute” on the left side of the page).
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the correct link under “Theses and Dissertations.” For example, if you are an undergraduate student posting your senior thesis, click “Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses."
  4. Read the Rights and Permissions agreement, check the box if you agree, and then click “Continue.” If you have any questions or reservations about this agreement, please contact the Scholarly Communications, Copyright, and Publishing Department at dartmouthdigitalcommons@groups.dartmouth.edu and we will be happy to talk to you about it.
  5. Follow the instructions on the form to enter the bibliographic information (author, graduation date, title, etc.) and upload your thesis. Be sure to select your academic department and enter the name(s) of the advisor(s) of your thesis.
  6. For “Embargo Period,” we recommend that you select “No embargo required” unless you have a specific reason (e.g. patent application, confidential information that you do not have permission to share publicly, or future publication options) that the thesis should not be made public immediately. If you do select one of the embargo periods, the title and date and other information you put in the form will be publicly posted in Dartmouth Digital Commons, but the thesis itself will not be made public until the end of the embargo period.
  7. Upload the file containing your thesis.
  8. Check the "Additional Files" box, which you will use to upload the Library Publishing Agreement and any other materials you want to include with your thesis.
  9. Click “Submit." On the following page, upload the Library Publishing Agreement and any supplementary materials (such as datasets, images, or videos that are not part of the thesis itself). The Publishing Agreement will not be public; other materials will be unless you specify otherwise.
  10. Your submission will be reviewed to confirm that it is the final, approved version of your thesis. If it is not, it will be rejected and you will be asked to submit the correct version.
  11. Your thesis will be posted and publicly available on Dartmouth Digital Commons in both the general Theses and Dissertations collection and under your academic department .
  12. Once posted, the thesis may not be revised, with the exception of the author’s name if needed (following the Author Name Change Policy). Theses in Dartmouth Digital Commons are expected to be the final version approved by the faculty for graduation, and the contents may not be changed after the fact.
