Interviews and Surveys

Surveys and interviews are important tools for understanding the population that you are designing for. The following resources come from a variety of subject areas but all have information that is applicable to design research.

Ethnography

Interviewing: Books and eBooks

  • Cover ArtExtraordinary Encounters by Katherine Smith (Editor); James Staples (Editor); Nigel Rapport (Editor)
Given the anthropological focus on ethnography as a kind of deep immersion, the interview poses theoretical and methodological challenges for the discipline. This volume explores those challenges and argues that the interview should be seen as a special, productive site of ethnographic encounter, a site of a very particular and important kind of knowing.
  • Cover ArtThe Interview by Jonathan Skinner (Editor)
What are new interview methods and practices in our new 'interview society' and how do they relate to traditional social science research? This volume interrogates the interview as understood, used - and under-used - by anthropologists. It puts the interview itself in the hotseat by exploring the nature of the interview, interview techniques, and illustrative cases of interview use. What is a successful and representative interview? How are interviews best transcribed and integrated into our writing?
  • Cover ArtInterview Techniques for UX Practitioners by Chauncey Wilson
Much of the work of user-centered design practitioners involves some type of interviewing. While interviewing is an important skill, many colleagues have little or no formal training in interviewing methods and often learn on the job with limited feedback on the quality of their interviews. This book teaches readers about the three basic interview methods: structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, and unstructured interviews.
  • Cover ArtLean Customer Development : Building Products Your Customers Will Buy by Cindy Alvarez
This practical guide shows you how to validate product and company ideas through customer development research—before you waste months and millions on a product or service that no one needs or wants. With a combination of open-ended interviewing and fast and flexible research techniques, you’ll learn how your prospective customers behave, the problems they need to solve, and what frustrates and delights them. These insights may shake your assumptions, but they’ll help you reach the "ah-ha!" moments that inspire truly great products.
  • Cover ArtLearning How to Ask by Charles L. Briggs
Interviews are ubiquitous in modern society, and they play a crucial role in social scientific research. But, as Charles Briggs convincingly argues in this book, received interviewing techniques rest on fundamental misapprehensions about the nature both of the interview as a communicative event, and of the nature of the data that it produces.

Interviewing: Courses, Videos, and Other

  • Customer Interviews: How to Recruit, What to Ask, and How to Synthesize What You Learn
Guide to product design interviews, from the Product Talk blog.

Ethnographic interviews are useful for learning about the behaviors of customers in the context in which they operate. Video features a description of an ethnographic interview and what was observed and learned in the process. Explores the challenges of using ethnographic interviews in the design process. Several best practices and techniques are introduced.

In the second chapter, questionnaires and surveys are discussed. Asking questions sounds simple, but the hard truth is that asking questions (and designing questionnaires) is a difficult task.
  • Cover ArtDesign, Evaluation, and Analysis of Questionnaires for Survey Research by Willem E. Saris; Irmtraud N. Gallhofer
Reflecting modern developments in the field of survey research, the Second Edition of Design, Evaluation, and Analysis of Questionnaires for Survey Research continues to provide cutting-edge analysis of the important decisions researchers make throughout the survey design process. The new edition covers the essential methodologies and statistical tools utilized to create reliable and accurate survey questionnaires, which unveils the relationship between individual question characteristics and overall question quality.

  • Approaches to Cross-Cultural Design: Two Case Studies with UX Web-Surveys. Tanja Walsh and Piia Nurkka
Cross-cultural design has become an area in HCI that needs more research in order to be able to respond to the demands of globalization and emerging markets.
