AI tools often allow the user to personalize their experience in some manner. Although the approach to implement the technique outlined here varies by tool, this information can be used to personalize the results in AI tools and enhance access to research material.
Dartmouth Libraries uses a tool named Libkey.io, from the same company that makes our Nomad++ browser extension, to provide access to the research material we license for use by our community by routing it through our Library Search system or our Interlibrary Loan service.
You can improve access to the results in an AI tool that provides a DOI or PMID value by using a link formatted to go through our Libkey.io service using this linking syntax:
https://libkey.io/libraries/252/[DOI or PMID]
Now let’s see how to use this linking syntax with ChatGPT.
You can have ChatGPT format DOI or PMID links in results by asking it to create a memory. You can do this by using the following prompt at the start of a chat:
If you return a DOI or PMID-formatted link, always format the link using this syntax: https://libkey.io/libraries/252/[DOI or PMID] With the link text formatted as: "Check access through Dartmouth Libraries"
After creating this memory, DOI and PMID links will be formatted to go through our Libkey.io service. After completing the setup, you can view or delete this memory by going to your ChatGPT user account, selecting Settings, and then selecting Personalization. From the Personalization menu, you can click on the "Manage memories” button to access this and other personalizations you’ve created.
This same technique can be applied to Dartmouth Chat. Be sure to select the toggle "Web Search" below the search box for the best results. Once you log into the Dartmouth Chat service, you can add the Libkey.io service permanently to your account by clicking on your user account, then selecting the Settings option, then the Personalization tab, and setting the Memory toggle to On. The image below shows the location of the toggle.
Then, click the Manage button, followed by the Create Memory button. Now you can add the following prompt permanently to your account.
If you return a DOI or PMID-formatted link, always format the link using this syntax: https://libkey.io/libraries/252/[DOI or PMID] With the link text formatted as: "Check access through Dartmouth Libraries"
Some research tools, like Keenious, have Libkey.io integrated into their platform, but you may need to set your affiliation with Dartmouth College to get the full benefit of the service. Keenious is an academic literature discovery platform that uses artificial intelligence to recommend articles. A personal account on the site is free and provides access to this feature.
After logging into the Keenious site with your free account and performing a search, several results will appear on the right side of the screen, each with an Access Full-Text button. Clicking the button will direct you to a screen, shown below, where you can set your Dartmouth College affiliation. Once you’ve set your affiliation, you are all set for future access to the website.
