WGSS 15 - Roots of Feminism - Winter 2017: Books

Prof. Julia Rabig

Finding Books in the Stacks

To find books within Dartmouth's collection, start with our library catalog - essentially our inventory.

An item's catalog record provides publication info, along with our Location (specific library), Call Number (where it's shelved), as well as the Status (whether it's currently on loan or not).

Lost in the stacks?  Maps of Baker-Berry are here.

Ready to borrow the book?  Take the book and your campus ID card to the Circulation Desk.

To find books beyond Dartmouth, try a subject bibliography or a large library network catalog, such as WorldCat. Materials not owned by Dartmouth can be requested through interlibrary loan: Interlibrary Loan & BorrowDirect

Browsing by call number

Relevant material falls throughout the collection, however the HQ section houses a large number of gender studies titles

  • HQ 12-449 (Sexuality)
    • HQ 19-30 (Sexual behavior & attitudes - General)
    • HQ 74-77 (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender studies)
  • HQ 1075 (Sex Role)
  • HQ 1088-1090 (Men's Studies)
  • HQ 1101-2031 (Feminist and Women's Studies)

Library Catalog Search Tips

Keyword search

Keyword searches can be simple -- searching across the full catalog record:

Or complex & field-specific (the "S:" in this example limits the search to the subject fields; the wildcard/truncation character "*" finds word stems):

When searching the library catalog, pay attention to the subject headings assigned to relevant titles. Refining your search using the same subject heading terminology may yield more precise results.

Subject search

Browsing the standardized subject headings can be especially useful for broad or unfamiliar topics.  Subject searches also tie in to a cross-referencing system, pointing to alternative or related headings. [Keyword searches don't tie in to these cross-references.]

When searching the library catalog, pay attention to subject headings assigned to relevant titles. Refining your search using the same subject heading terminology may yield more precise results.

There are many relevant headings, which are often further qualified by region, time period or sub-topic.

WorldCat

WorldCat is the union catalog of all libraries in the huge library network called "OCLC."  Most items are cataloged using the same Library of Congress subject headings used at Dartmouth.  Items not available in the Dartmouth collection can be requested via : Interlibrary Loan & BorrowDirect
