Fully citing your sources allows you to:

  • give credit to the people whose ideas inspired you
  • give your reader a sense for how you did your research
  • give your reader enough information to hunt down the documents if they want to read further

Style Manuals for APA, CBE, Chicago & MLA

APA (American Psychological Association) style is used widely in the Social Sciences. CBE (Council of Biology Editors - now Council of Science Editors) style is used widely throughout the Sciences.  Chicago style forms the basis for History, Anthropology, and other styles.  MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used in Humanities disciplines such as English and Comparative Literature.
