In the Library's Collection
The library's collection contains several books and journal titles which look at online or digital cartography. The resources are scattered throughout the collections under different call numbers. However, one call number range, G 70.212, is a good starting place to physically browse.

Introduction to Mapping Online
This page highlights resources both purchased and free that allow you to create maps online. In most cases, you do not have to install software. The site provides data and other resources you need to create a map. Click on a tab and get started mapping!
The resources available include:
- Social ExplorerWe have the Premium Edition. There is a Free edition which has access to less data.
- American FactfinderThis product is from the Census Bureau.
- Historical Census BrowserYou cannot download the data from this product from the University of Virginia, but you can create maps of the different variables.
- Community AnalystThis online product is from ESRI. It is currently in Beta testing.
- Mapping for EveryoneThis is an ESRI product. You can either map online or download the Explorer product and map there.

Making your own maps!
- Mapping for EveryoneA site from ESRI, makers of ArcGIS, which allows you to map a limited range of variables and inbed those maps into web pages.
- BatchGeoThis site allows you to convert a list of addresses into points on a map. If you have a spreadsheet of addresses, this site will convert them to points and you can then map those points.
- Geocoding from TravelGIS.comGeocode individual addresses and map that point.
- FreeDemographics.comFreeDemographicsTM, a product of SRC, LLC, introduces novice and expert users of demographic data to a new and powerful way to view and act upon consumer and market insights, using instant interactive maps, detailed summary and comparison reports, and fast access to U.S. Census data sorted by geographies and demographic characteristics.
- Social Explorer - Professional EditionSocial Explorer provides easy access to demographic information about the United States, from 1790 to present.
- Sketch-A-MapSketch-A-Map is a web mapping tool that allows you to draw shapes on top of a map. You can pick from several base maps and any geographic extent and begin drawing points, lines, polygons and more.
