Review the bibliographies of important documents for influential past research, but be aware you can track research forward to see what documents (primarily scholarly articles) have cited a particular item.
Try searching your original document in these databases. If that item is included in the results, look for a "Cited by" link. If the item doesn't show up, try a "Cited Reference" search in Web of Science. [In Scopus, limit the search to the "References" field]
