eBooks

  • Cover Art Design Anthropology by Wendy Gunn (Editor); Ton Otto (Editor); Rachel Charlotte Smith (Editor)
    Publication Date: 2013
Design is a key site of cultural production and change in contemporary society. Anthropologists have been involved in design projects for several decades but only recently a new field of inquiry has emerged which aims to integrate the strengths of design thinking and anthropological research. This book is written by anthropologists who actively participate in the development of design anthropology. Comprising both cutting-edge explorations and theoretical reflections, it provides a much-needed introduction to the concepts, methods, practices and challenges of the new field.
  • Cover Art Design Justice by Sasha Costanza-Chock
    Publication Date: 2020
An exploration of how design might be led by marginalized communities, dismantle structural inequality, and advance collective liberation and ecological survival. What is the relationship between design, power, and social justice? "Design justice" is an approach to design that is led by marginalized communities and that aims explicitly to challenge, rather than reproduce, structural inequalities. It has emerged from a growing community of designers in various fields who work closely with social movements and community-based organizations around the world.
  • Cover Art The Design Thinking Toolbox by Michael Lewrick; Patrick Link; Larry Leifer
    Publication Date: 2020
How to use the Design Thinking Tools A practical guide to make innovation happen The Design Thinking Toolbox explains the most important tools and methods to put Design Thinking into action. Based on the largest international survey on the use of design thinking, the most popular methods are described in four pages each by an expert from the global Design Thinking community. If you are involved in innovation, leadership, or design, these are tools you need.
  • Cover Art Human Centered AI by Ben Shneiderman
    Publication Date: 2022
The remarkable progress in algorithms for machine and deep learning have opened the doors to new opportunities, and some dark possibilities. However, a bright future awaits those who build on their working methods by including HCAI strategies of design and testing. As many technology companies and thought leaders have argued, the goal is not to replace people, but to empower them by making design choices that give humans control over technology. In this book, Professor Ben Shneiderman offers an optimistic realist's guide to how artificial intelligence can be used to augment and enhance humans' lives. This project bridges the gap between ethical considerations and practical realities to offer a road map for successful, reliable systems.
  • Cover Art Introduction to Product Design and Development for Engineers by Ali Ali Jamnia
    Publication Date: 2018
Introduction to Product Design and Development for Engineers provides guidelines and best practices for the design, development, and evaluation of engineered products. Created to serve fourth year undergraduate students in Engineering Design modules with a required project, the text covers the entire product design process and product life-cycle, from the initial concept to the design and development stages, and through to product testing, design documentation, manufacturability, marketing, and sustainability. Reflecting the author's long career as a design engineer, this text will also serve as a practical guide for students working on their capstone design projects.
  • Cover Art Medical Device Design: Innovation from Concept to Market by Peter J. Ogrodnik
    Publication Date: 2019
Medical Device Design: Innovation from Concept to Market, Second Edition provides the bridge between engineering design and medical device development. There is no single text that addresses the plethora of design issues a medical devices designer meets when developing new products or improving older ones; this book fills that need. It addresses medical devices' regulatory (FDA and EU) requirements, shows the essential methodologies medical designers must understand to ensure their products meet requirements, and brings together proven design protocols, thus enabling engineers and medical device manufacturers to rapidly bring new products to the marketplace. This book is unique because it takes the reader through the process of medical device development, from very early stages of conceptualization, to commercialization on the global market. This rare resource can be used by both professionals and newcomers to device design.
  • Cover Art Success Through Failure by Henry Petroski
    Publication Date: 2018
Design pervades our lives. Everything from drafting a PowerPoint presentation to planning a state-of-the-art bridge embodies this universal human activity. But what makes a great design? In this compelling and wide-ranging look at the essence of invention, distinguished engineer and author Henry Petroski argues that, time and again, we have built success on the back of failure--not through easy imitation of success. Success through Failure shows us that making something better--by carefully anticipating and thus averting failure--is what invention and design are all about. Petroski explores the nature of invention and the character of the inventor through an unprecedented range of both everyday and extraordinary examples--illustrated lectures, child-resistant packaging for drugs, national constitutions, medical devices, the world's tallest skyscrapers, long-span bridges, and more.

Books

  • Cover Art The Atomic Chef by Steven M. Casey
    Publication Date: 2006
The Atomic Chef is a collection of 20 true stories about technology and design-induced human error. The 20 stand-alone chapters describe how technological failures result from the incompatibilities between the way things are designed and the way people actually perceive, think, and act. New technologies will succeed or fail based on our ability to minimize these incompatibilities between the characteristics of people and the characteristics of the things we create and use. From the frustration of an awkward ATM machine to the threat of accidental, nuclear Armageddon, Casey shows how the same crucial factors come into play told through the very eyes of those people who saw and experienced these things. No student of design, psychology, behavioral science, or technology should be without this book.
