Intern, Fellow, and Resident research resources: Research metrics

An intro to library resources intended to help Interns, Fellows, and Residents with their research and work

Research metrics

Measure the "impact" of a journal, find a journal to publish in, or look at the metrics (or H-index) for specific researchers. Expand the reach of your research by registering for a Google Scholar account, and get an ORCIDiD.

A metric proposed by Hirsch (PNAS; 2005 102(46):16569), the H-index combines measures of productivity (number of articles published) and impact (number of citations for each paper).  The H-index of an author is the largest number h such that h articles by that author have been cited at least h times each.  So an H-index of 15 means the researcher has published at least 15 articles that have been cited at least 15 times each.  A researcher’s h-index is expected to increase as their career progresses.  H-index can also be measured for journals.
