Chinese Resources

  • Down to the Countryside Movement.
    This unique original collection at the Dartmouth Library includes diaries, manuscripts, letters, photographs, and artifacts created by former youths during the rustication period in China from 1968-1980. These images provide access to first-hand accounts reflecting on their experiences, shifting their perspectives, and recalling their living conditions during this historical movement in the midst of the Cultural Revolution.
  • Mao Zedong ping dian er shi si shi 毛澤東評點二十四史
    In 1996, the Thread-Bound Books Press (Xianzhuang shuju) in Beijing published the best-quality reproduction of the 850 volumes of the Twenty-Four Histories with Mao's original calligraphy and commentaries. The entire set was printed and bound in the traditional Chinese way, and only the best hand-made jade-plate rice paper and high-quality 100% silk (damask silk and satin) were used. The set is presented in eighty (80) cases. Only 500 sets were produced, and each set has its serial number.
  • The Papers of Charles Daniel Papers
    Tenney, Charles Daniel, 1857-1930.
    Drafts and typescripts of Charles Tenney's essays on China and Chinese culture. Includes essays on language reform, education, religion, Judaism in China, and on several major temples. Tenney was a member of Dartmouth class of 1878 and a missionary, educator and diplomat in China from 1884-1920
  • Xi xian wu zhan shi = All quiet on the western front. 西线无战事.
    Adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel, All quiet on the western front, presented in lianhuanhua genre as a palm-sized storybook with sequential pictures and verbal captions.

Japanese Resources

  • Collection of three illustrated manuscript orihons about marksmanship using matchlock muskets in Japan from approximately 1607.
    Volume one concerns various body positions for shooting. Volume two concerns issues of ballistics and marksmanship. The postscript indicates that the techniques are secrets from Iganyudo Ichimu Inatomi, founder of the Inatomi ryu, a school for gunnery. Volume three concerns ballistics of rifles including lengths of barrels, bullets, hand positions, and breathing techniques. Manuals may have been used by samurai or ashigaru or within gunnery schools.
  • Illustrated Japanese scroll containing eyewitness accounts and diplomatic documents from American and Russian expeditions to initiate trade agreements in Japan in approximately 1853 : manuscript
    Manuscript reports, including eyewitness accounts, concerning the early efforts by the United States and by the Russian Empire to open trade with Japan as compiled contemporaneously with events. Also included, manuscript copies of documents and correspondence from American and Russian representatives at the time.
  • Imayo shokunin zukushi uta awase.
    An imaginary poetry contest in which the competing poets are depicted with the garb and tolls of various occupations. Illustrated guide to 72 trades as practiced in the Edo period in Japan. Each woodcut depicts two trades and compares them and, in the facing poem, makes a conclusion which is superior.
