Baker-Berry Information & Research Desks: Break Policy

Break Policy

Under New Hampshire labor laws, employers cannot require that an employee work more than five (5) consecutive hours without granting a thirty (30) minute lunch or eating period.  If an employer chooses to provide additional breaks, they must be paid if they last less than twenty (20) minutes.

For students working at the Baker-Berry Research & Information Desks, this law is adhered to in the following manner:

REGARDLESS OF SHIFT LENGTH:

Any small break of <20 minutes does not need to be scheduled, and can be requested at any time by calling a person on the ‘Temporary Desk Coverage’ list posted at each desk.  These short breaks are paid.

Longer breaks (20+ minutes) must be requested at the beginning of your shift.  Tor To request a long break, Monday-Friday, please contact Greg Potter at the beginning of your shift to find an agreeable time for your break.  If Greg is out of the office, please contact Laura Braunstein or any of the Librarians on duty to arrange your break.

At all other times, please contact the Circulation Desk at the beginning of your shift to schedule your break.

Please note that you will not be paid for breaks longer than 20 minutes.
