Video Series

  • Diversity and Inclusion in Data Science
In a series of video lectures Noelle Silver, Head of Instruction, Data Science, Analytics, and Full Stack Web Development at HackerU, underscores the critical importance of creating more diversity among the teams that build and develop technology
  • Equality Data Collection
Equality data can provide powerful tools against discrimination and exclusion, shedding light on the situation of groups that are at risk of discrimination. This video explores why we need equality data collection and how it could be done better.

Articles

  • Detecting Racial Bias in Algorthims and Machine Learning
The online economy has not resolved the issue of racial bias in its applications. While algorithms are procedures that facilitate automated decision-making, or a sequence of unambiguous instructions, bias is a byproduct of these computations, bringing harm to historically disadvantaged populations. This paper argues that algorithmic biases explicitly and implicitly harm racial groups and lead to forms of discrimination.
  • Engineering Bias out of AI
IEEE Spectrum article about how to reduce the bias that can occur in data gathering.
  • Reflections on Power and Privilege in Design: A Letter from Three White Design Educators
It is time for a reckoning in the United States around our violent past and painful present regarding racism, discrimination, and systemic oppression. It is time to realize that systems of oppression and inequity have been designed, and must therefore be re-designed. We believe the public discourse around these ideas—led by Antionette Carroll and others—is a critical step in this process of reckoning. Design thinking is, in part, a product of this inequity for reasons we will expand upon below. And yet we believe we need design thinking to imagine and enact a different future.
  • Tech Takes on Its Racist Terminology.
Garaudy Etienne is among the team at MongoDB now taking a programmatic approach to eradicating “master” and “slave” from its code and documentation, joining other technology companies and individual technologists in pushing back against problematic language long used in the profession.

Books

  • Cover ArtCross Cultural Design by Senongo Akpem
Senongo Akpem shares a clear and accessible methodology for designing across cultures: from performing socially conscious research, to building culturally responsive experiences, to developing meaningful internationalization and localization approaches.
  • Cover ArtData Feminism by Catherine D'Ignazio and Lauren F. Klein
A new way of thinking about data science and data ethics that is informed by the ideas of intersectional feminism. Today, data science is a form of power. It has been used to expose injustice, improve health outcomes, and topple governments. But it has also been used to discriminate, police, and surveil. This potential for good, on the one hand, and harm, on the other, makes it essential to ask: Data science by whom?
  • Cover ArtHuman Aspects of IT for the Aged Population. Design for Aging by Jia Zhou and Gavriel Salvendy (Editors)
These papers of the two volume set address as follows: LNCS 9193, Design for Aging (Part I), addressing the following major topics: HCI design and evaluation methods for the elderly; ICT use and acceptance; aging, the web and social media; and the elderly and mobile devices and LNCS 9194, Design for Everyday Life (Part II), addressing the following major topics: health care technologies and services for the elderly; home and work support; smart environment and AAL; and communication, games, and entertainment.
  • Cover ArtInvisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, because it treats men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias, in time, money, and often with their lives.
  • Cover ArtPractical Web Inclusion and Accessibility A Comprehensive Guide to Access Needs by Ashley. Firth
Recognizing and catering for a range of disabilities in our online platforms is key to achieving a truly inclusive web. You’ll be guided through a broad range of access needs, the barriers users often face, and provided practical advice on how your sites can help rather than hinder. This book comes complete with practical examples you can use in your own sites and, for the first time in any web accessibility book, access needs experienced by those with mental health disorders and cognitive impairments are comprehensively covered.
  • Cover ArtThe Smart Wife : Why Siri, Alexa, and Other Smart Home Devices Need a Feminist Reboot by Yolande Strengers, Jenny Kennedy
In The Smart Wife, Yolande Strengers and Jenny Kennedy examine the emergence of digital devices that carry out "wifework"--domestic responsibilities that have traditionally fallen to (human) wives. They show that the principal prototype for these virtual helpers--designed in male-dominated industries--is the 1950s housewife: white, middle class, heteronormative, and nurturing, with a spick-and-span home. It's time, they say, to give the Smart Wife a reboot.
  • Cover ArtStuck in the Shallow End by Jane Margolis, Rachel Estrella, Jennifer Jellison Holm, and Kim Nao
An investigation into why so few African American and Latino high school students are studying computer science reveals the dynamics of inequality in American schools. The number of African Americans and Latino/as receiving undergraduate and advanced degrees in computer science is disproportionately low, according to recent surveys. And relatively few African American and Latino/a high school students receive the kind of institutional encouragement, educational opportunities, and preparation needed for them to choose computer science as a field of study and profession.
